A tragic Nithi Bridge accident has claimed two lives after a lorry veered off the crossing and plunged into the river below. The incident occurred on Tuesday in Tharaka Nithi County. The truck was transporting a load of green bananas from Meru to Nairobi when the accident happened.

The vehicle reportedly lost control while approaching the bridge. It then crashed through the barrier and fell into the Nithi River. The impact was severe, breaking the lorry into several pieces. Its mangled front section and parts of the suspension were seen submerged in the water.

Eyewitness Accounts of the Nithi Bridge Accident

Local witnesses described a harrowing scene. They stated the heavily loaded lorry was descending the steep incline at a very high speed. This has led to initial suggestions that the driver may have experienced brake failure. The fatal Nithi Bridge accident has sparked renewed anger among residents.

One witness confirmed the recovery of two bodies from the wreckage. The community is now demanding immediate government action to improve safety at the notorious site. Police from the Nithi Bridge station were deployed to secure the area and assist in recovery operations.

History of Deadly Crashes at the Site

This latest tragedy underscores the dangerous reputation of the Nithi Bridge approach. The area is known for a steep descent and a sharp bend leading onto the crossing. These features have been contributing factors in several fatal accidents over the years.

The incident has intensified scrutiny of a government pledge to address the problem. President William Ruto recently vowed to construct a new Nithi Bridge. He confirmed the procurement process was underway during a meeting with local leaders in August. The project is estimated to cost Sh7 billion.

The authorities made this promise following a previous deadly crash at the same location. In September 2024, twelve people died in a head-on collision on the bridge. Community leaders have long argued that a modern, safer bridge is essential to prevent further loss of life.
