“We pray for the swift recovery of those injured,” he added.

According to early reports and eyewitness accounts from the scene, the accident involved a matatu and a lorry. Witnesses have described a horrific scene, alleging that more than 15 people may have lost their lives in the crash. It is further claimed that all passengers who were in the matatu died on the spot, along with two individuals who were in the lorry. However, official confirmation of the exact number of casualties is still pending as authorities continue to assess the situation.

Emergency responders and local authorities arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, working to rescue survivors and transport the injured to nearby medical facilities. The scale of the accident has raised concerns about road safety along the busy Nyeri route, particularly around areas with high student activity.

President Ruto assured the public that the government is actively responding to the situation. He noted that the national government, in collaboration with the Nyeri County government, is already engaging with the affected families to offer support during this difficult period.

“The national government, in conjunction with the county government of Nyeri, is engaging with the affected families and will provide all necessary support,” he stated.

Messages of condolence have continued to pour in from leaders, institutions, and members of the public as the country mourns yet another painful loss on its roads.

As investigations into the cause of the accident begin, questions are likely to emerge regarding road conditions, vehicle safety, and adherence to traffic regulations. Authorities are expected to release more details once identification of victims is complete and next of kin are notified.

For now, the focus remains on supporting the bereaved families and ensuring that the injured receive urgent medical care. The nation stands in solidarity with those affected, united in grief and in hope for healing.
