Radio Africa Ordered to Pay Oga Obinna Ksh 6.1M in Radio Jambo Defamation Case

Radio Africa Group has been ordered to pay media personality Oga Obinna Ksh 6.1 million in a landmark defamation ruling linked to a segment aired on Radio Jambo.

Defamatory Broadcast Sparks Lawsuit

The case began when a socialite appeared on Massawe Japanni’s Radio Jambo show and made serious allegations against Obinna—claims he says were false and baseless. Obinna filed suit a year ago, arguing that the host and producers aired the segment without verifying the claims or seeking his response.

“The host and producers never asked for evidence,” Obinna stated. “They aired it for views and likes, knowing we had never even met.”

Court Awards Ksh 6.1 Million in Damages

Senior Principal Magistrate Edward Too ruled in Obinna’s favor on November 5, 2025, awarding a total of Ksh 6.1 million in damages:

  • Ksh 5 million in general damages
  • Ksh 500,000 in aggravated damages
  • Ksh 500,000 in lieu of an apology
  • Ksh 100,000 in exemplary damages

The court also issued a permanent injunction barring Radio Africa, Massawe Japanni, and the unnamed socialite from publishing similar defamatory statements about Obinna.

Defendants Fail to Apologize or Appear

Obinna noted that despite working with Massawe and Radio Africa in the past—at QFM and other stations—no effort was made to confirm the allegations before broadcast. The socialite never appeared in court and is reportedly in hiding. None of the defendants issued an apology, even as Obinna faced public ridicule and brand damage.

Warning to Online Defamers

A veteran presenter at Kiss 100 and Nation FM, Obinna used the ruling to send a message: “Stop defaming me, or I will sue you—and use the money to finish building my home.”
