Nairobi Man Jailed for Failing to Pay Bill After Night of Partying

A Nairobi man has been sentenced to two months in prison or a fine of Ksh.30,000 for failing to pay a hotel bill amounting to Ksh.22,760 after a night of partying.

The Costly Night Out

The court heard that Qurine Omondi Muteshi obtained credit by false pretense on October 3, 2025, at Vibanda Village in Upper Hill, Nairobi County. According to the prosecution, Omondi ordered food, alcoholic drinks, and water for himself and several friends before leaving without settling the bill. When presented, the total cost had escalated to Ksh.22,760.

Man Pleads for Leniency

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, Omondi admitted he had lost control during the celebration.
“I had some money so I called my friends to celebrate. During the celebration, I became so high and was surrounded by many ladies, each asking for drinks. Eventually, people disappeared, and I was left alone with the bill,” he said in court.

He also claimed that he later discovered suspicious loan deductions on his phone, which may have worsened his financial situation. Pleading for leniency, Omondi told the court that life in Nairobi had been challenging, saying he was still learning to navigate the city.

The Court’s Verdict

After reviewing his mitigation, Magistrate Onyina sentenced Omondi to two months in prison or a fine of Ksh.30,000. The case has drawn public attention as a cautionary tale about responsible spending and accountability during social outings.

Legal experts have since noted that obtaining services under false pretense, even unintentionally, remains a criminal offense under the Kenya Penal Code, emphasizing the need for financial discipline and honesty in transactions.
