University of Nairobi Student Murdered After Family Failed to Pay Ksh.1,500 Ransom
A University of Nairobi student was brutally murdered after her family could not raise a Ksh.1,500 ransom demanded by her alleged abductor. Jane Atila, a second-year student at the Kikuyu campus, vanished on October 3, 2025. Her decomposing body was found in KEFRI Forest on October 17 and later identified through fingerprint analysis.
Abduction and Ransom Demand
Police say Jane was abducted by Nicholas Mutua Mutia, who allegedly called her family demanding Ksh.2,500. Her brother, Patrick Mwangale, sent Ksh.1,000 but could not raise the remaining balance. Mutua reportedly threatened Jane’s life if the full amount was not paid. “He said he had my sister and would not release her until he got the money,” Patrick stated.
Pattern of Violence Emerges
Mutua is now linked to multiple attacks in KEFRI Forest. Two other women gave statements at Kikuyu Police Station, alleging abduction, robbery, torture, and sexual assault by the same suspect. One victim recounted how Mutua boasted about previous killings and demanded mobile money PINs.
Police Response Under Scrutiny
Jane’s family claims they reported her disappearance twice at Kabete Police Station but were turned away. Human rights groups now accuse police of negligence in handling early reports. Authorities have since arrested Mutua and two other suspects in connection with Jane’s murder.
Call for Justice
Activists urge faster action on gender-based violence and better police responsiveness. As investigations continue, authorities are calling on other potential victims to come forward with information.
