Two DCI Officers Charged With Abducting and Robbing Blogger
Two former officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have been detained for eight days after being charged with abducting and robbing blogger Bravin Korir near Mbagathi Hospital in Nairobi.
Court Grants Police More Time for Investigations
The suspects appeared before Principal Magistrate Daisy Mutai at the Kibera Law Court on October 23. The magistrate granted investigators additional time to complete their inquiries, citing incomplete evidence and uncertainty about the suspects’ residences.
“The investigating officer has not been able to establish where you live. There are investigations they have not been able to finish,” Magistrate Mutai said while issuing the detention order.
The suspects, both former DCI officers, are accused of forcibly taking Korir and stealing an undisclosed amount of money during the July 17 incident.
Arrest and Recovery of Suspected Stolen Items
The two were arrested on October 22 in Kitengela, where they had allegedly been hiding from police. During the operation, officers recovered several items suspected to be linked to criminal activity, including multiple vehicle number plates, seven mobile phones, ID cards, a tear gas canister, and a pair of handcuffs.
According to police, the items may have been used in previous cases of unlawful detention and intimidation.
Blogger Recounts Harrowing Ordeal
Korir said he was abducted by masked men claiming to be DCI officers from Central Police Station as he left Mbagathi Hospital early in the morning.
“As I was leaving Mbagathi at around 6:20 a.m., three men confronted me and said they were DCI officers. Luckily, a hospital employee saw me being shoved into a car,” he recalled.
He added that the suspects were driving a Honda Fit with fake registration plates that they had swapped after acquiring the vehicle. “They covered some identifiers with black tape but forgot one on the driver’s seat. That detail helped police trace the car,” Korir explained.
Continued Detention as Probe Progresses
Principal Magistrate Mutai directed that the suspects remain in custody for eight days as investigations continue. Police are expected to present their findings before the court once the probe concludes.
