Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has praised KANU party leader Gideon Moi for stepping down from the Baringo senatorial race, calling the move a demonstration of political maturity and national unity.

Gideon Moi’s Decision Lauded as Wise and Strategic

Speaking during the Jukwa La Usalama Forum on Thursday evening, Murkomen said Moi’s decision not to vie in the upcoming Baringo contest reflected “wisdom and statesmanship.” He added that veteran politicians sometimes achieve more by stepping aside to allow younger leaders to emerge.

“Gideon Moi has done a wise thing; it could have seemed very bad if he had continued to run for the seat. There is a stage if you reach you cannot compete with young people to run for a political seat,” Murkomen stated.

The CS noted that although some of Moi’s supporters might be disappointed, his decision was ultimately “the right one” for both his reputation and political legacy.

Ruto-Moi Meeting Tied to Broad-Based Government

Murkomen also linked Moi’s Thursday meeting with President William Ruto at State House to ongoing efforts to build a broad-based government, which now includes figures allied to Raila Odinga and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

According to Murkomen, the meeting was more than symbolic — it marked a political realignment as leaders begin preparing for the 2027 general election.

“The meeting with the President was also a sign of unity because, as you are aware, there is a broad-based government which has Raila and former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s allies in it,” Murkomen said.
“So, Gideon Moi has been invited to be in the broad-based government. We are also looking at the future in 2027, so that we can come together,” he added.

KANU Withdraws from Baringo Race

Murkomen’s remarks came shortly after KANU Secretary General George Wainaina confirmed that the party would not field a candidate in the Baringo senatorial race. The decision, announced after several meetings between Ruto and Moi, effectively hands the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) a political advantage in the region.

Reports suggest that Moi and Ruto had held two prior meetings before their latest engagement, during which the President reportedly persuaded the KANU leader to step aside.

The latest development underscores Kenya’s shifting political alliances, with key leaders working to consolidate influence ahead of 2027.
