Kisumu Venue Changed for Raila Odinga Body Viewing
The viewing of Raila Odinga’s body in Kisumu has been moved from Moi Stadium to the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo, officials have confirmed.
Kisumu County Commissioner Benson Leparmorijo announced the change on Thursday after inspecting the new venue, stating that the decision was reached following consultations within the State Funeral Organising Committee chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
Security and Logistical Concerns Prompt Venue Change
Leparmorijo explained that the move was influenced by security and logistical concerns, noting recent incidents of muggings and crowd unrest in the city.
“There are a few cases of muggings and extortion within Kisumu, and that cannot be allowed in law. We urge all mourners to maintain peace and observe the law,” said the Commissioner.
Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga said the new venue will have at least three open gates to control public entry and exit, including a separate VIP section. He also advised mourners to prepare for possible rainfall and to “mourn peacefully and respectfully.”
Similar Changes Made in Nairobi
The development mirrors a similar change made in Nairobi, where the public viewing of Raila’s body was moved from Parliament Buildings to Kasarani Stadium after overwhelming crowds disrupted earlier plans.
In both cities, mourners turned up in their thousands to pay tribute to the late opposition leader. At Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), massive crowds gathered to receive Raila’s body when it arrived from India, blocking several roads leading to the Lee Funeral Home.
At Kasarani Stadium, the situation grew chaotic after impatient supporters attempted to breach the VIP area, forcing police to fire tear gas to restore order.
State Funeral Programme Continues
According to the State Funeral Committee, Raila will be honoured in a four-day State Funeral concluding with his private burial in Bondo on Sunday. The programme includes public viewings, religious services, and military honours in line with his national stature.
