The Homa Bay shooting during Raila Odinga vigil has sparked outrage after the family of the deceased woman accused a police officer of intimidation and attempts to influence the case. The family is demanding justice and protection as investigations continue.

Family Alleges Blackmail by Suspect

Speaking on October 22, the victim’s father claimed that the police officer suspected of fatally shooting his daughter has been calling family members, asking for forgiveness and urging them to transfer the case from Homa Bay to Kendu Bay.

“This man keeps calling my friends, asking that I forgive him. What exactly am I forgiving him for? He knew what he was doing to my daughter,” he said.

He further alleged that the officer called another family member, instructing them not to attend court sessions in Homa Bay. “Did this incident happen in Kendu Bay or in Homa Bay?” he questioned.

Calls for IPOA and DCI Intervention

Relatives of the victim have urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to take swift action and ensure that justice is served.

“We as a family only need justice to be done. IPOA and DCI already have the case, but we want to see tangible results,” one relative stated.

The family maintains that the suspect should be held accountable and that any attempt to shift the case could compromise the integrity of the investigation.

Incident During Raila Odinga Vigil

The tragedy occurred on October 16 during a candlelight vigil in Homa Bay town, where mourners had gathered to honour the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

According to police reports, mourners later marched toward a local police station. Officers alleged that some in the crowd began throwing stones at the station, prompting one officer to open fire. Sub-County Police Commander Jashon Polloh confirmed that a woman was struck by a stray bullet.

She was rushed to the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.

Investigation and Justice Efforts Continue

Authorities have not disclosed whether the officer involved has been formally arrested or suspended. IPOA is expected to file a report once investigations conclude.

The family has vowed to continue seeking justice, insisting that the case remain in Homa Bay, where the incident occurred. Civil society groups in the region have also called for transparency and accountability from law enforcement.
