State House Arrow Attack Suspect Ordered to Hospital, Detained 14 Days
A Kibera court has ordered the detention of State House killing suspect Kithuka Kimunyi for 14 days as investigations continue into the death of GSU officer Ramadhan Mattanka.
Suspect to Receive Medical Treatment
Kimunyi, accused of fatally shooting Constable Mattanka with an arrow at State House Nairobi on Monday, October 13, was arraigned on Tuesday, October 14. The court directed that he undergo medical treatment at Mbagathi Hospital before being held in custody for two weeks.
During the hearing, prosecutors told the court that the suspect appeared to have sustained injuries before his arrest, as he was seen limping during arraignment.
Prosecution Seeks More Time for Investigation
Initially, the prosecution had sought 21 days to complete investigations but the judge revised the detention period to 14 days. The prosecution cited the suspect’s lack of a verifiable residence as a major reason for continued detention, saying it would be difficult to trace him if released.
Attack at State House Gate D
Investigations revealed that Kimunyi, who hails from Makueni County, left home on Sunday, October 12, before heading to Nairobi. He approached GSU officers at Gate D. The prosecution said he seemed disoriented. He ignored orders to leave the area.
Moments later, he allegedly fired two arrows, one of which struck Constable Ramadhan on the left side of his chest. The officer was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The post-mortem was released Tuesday. An arrow caused the fatal injury. It pierced the seventh and eighth ribs. The arrow went through the left lung. It also punctured the victim’s heart. This caused fatal internal bleeding.
The suspect remains under police custody as authorities continue probing the motive behind the attack and his movements prior to the incident.
