High Court Summons Top Officials in Mwenda Mbijiwe Case
The High Court has summoned Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga to personally appear in court on October 15, 2025, over the unresolved disappearance of security analyst Mwenda Mbijiwe.
Mbijiwe vanished on June 12, 2021, while traveling from Nairobi to his home in Meru. His car was later found abandoned near Tatu City in Kiambu County, with no trace of him since.
Court Demands Answers After 4-Year Silence
In a ruling delivered Tuesday, October 14, Justice Martin Muya ordered the two officials to explain:
- The whereabouts of Mbijiwe
- Why they failed to comply with a previous court order issued last month demanding his production “dead or alive”
The judge emphasized that their physical presence is non-negotiable, underscoring the gravity of the constitutional breach alleged in the case.
Disappearance Linked to DCI, Death Threats
Reports indicate Mbijiwe was last seen in Roysambu, Nairobi, in the company of unidentified individuals in an unmarked vehicle—believed to be officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
At the time, he was facing a fraud case involving Ksh150,000 linked to a failed UN job promise. His lawyer, Evans Ondieki, revealed Mbijiwe had repeatedly reported death threats at Central Police Station before vanishing.
Family’s Four-Year Search Yields Nothing
Mbijiwe’s mother, Jane Gatwiri M’ithinji, filed a petition last month alongside Ondieki, stating she searched every police station, hospital, prison, and mortuary—to no avail.
The petition describes her ordeal as “psychological and emotional torture” and accuses state agents of unlawful detention, violating Mbijiwe’s constitutional rights to liberty and fair treatment.
The court is now demanding accountability from the highest levels of Kenya’s justice and security systems.
