Tragedy as Expreso Sacco Conductor Dies After Fall Along Mwea Route

It is with profound sorrow that Expreso Sacco has announced the untimely death of Banton Gokonyo, a conductor who was operating under the “Madmax” crew at the time of his passing.

According to preliminary accounts from the driver, the crew had departed from Nairobi in the morning, heading toward Matuu before proceeding to Mwea. The tragic incident occurred near Mutithi, where Gokonyo reportedly fell from the moving vehicle under circumstances that are yet to be fully established.

He was rushed to a nearby private medical facility, but was sadly pronounced dead on arrival.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the transport fraternity, particularly among colleagues within Expreso Sacco, where Gokonyo was described as a committed and hardworking team member.

In a condolence message issued on behalf of the Sacco chairman and management, the organization extended its sympathies to the family, friends, and relatives of the deceased, describing his death as a significant loss to the entire team.

This tragedy highlights ongoing safety concerns within Kenya’s public transport sector, where conductors—commonly known as “makangas”—often operate under high-risk conditions, including hanging onto moving vehicles or working in fast-paced environments along busy highways.

Similar incidents have been reported in recent years across major routes linking towns such as Nairobi, Mwea, and other high-traffic corridors, raising calls for stricter enforcement of safety measures within the matatu industry.

Authorities are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the incident as part of standard procedure.

As the transport community mourns, Expreso Sacco has indicated that further details regarding the incident and burial arrangements will be communicated in due course.

Family, friends, and colleagues continue to remember Banton Gokonyo as they pray for strength during this difficult time, with many expressing hope that greater attention will be placed on improving safety standards in the sector.
