A tragic road crash along the Kakamega–Mumias Highway has claimed the life of a police officer attached to Kakamega Central Police Station, in an incident that has once again raised concerns over safety on the busy sugar belt route.
According to preliminary reports, the officer was behind the wheel of a police vehicle when it collided head-on with a speeding truck ferrying sugarcane.
The impact was severe, leaving the police vehicle mangled and the truck extensively damaged, with debris scattered across the highway. Witnesses at the scene described the collision as sudden and violent, noting that both vehicles appeared to have been traveling at considerable speed before the crash.
Traffic along the highway was temporarily disrupted as emergency responders and local police moved in to secure the scene and clear the wreckage. The damaged vehicles were later towed to Kakamega Central Police Station, where they will be held pending inspection as part of ongoing investigations.
The body of the deceased officer has been transferred to the Kakamega County Referral Funeral Parlour. Authorities indicated that identification details, including the officer’s name, are being withheld for now pending formal notification of next of kin.
Early indications suggest that factors such as overspeeding, poor visibility, or possible misjudgment during overtaking could have contributed to the crash, though investigators have yet to release an official cause.
The Kakamega–Mumias stretch is known for heavy traffic, especially trucks transporting sugarcane to nearby factories, and has in the past been flagged as a high-risk corridor for accidents.
Police have launched a full investigation into the incident, including mechanical inspection of both vehicles and reconstruction of the crash scene. Officers are also appealing to motorists using the route to exercise caution, particularly when navigating around slow-moving or heavily loaded trucks.
The fatal accident adds to a growing list of road tragedies involving government vehicles and commercial transport, highlighting persistent gaps in road safety enforcementand driver discipline across Kenya’s highways.
