A suspected gang leader has been shot dead following a fierce overnight gun battle with security officers in Igembe North, in an operation authorities say has dealt a major blow to criminal networks operating in the region.
The incident occurred at around 2:00 a.m. on March 21, 2026, during a joint patrol by officers from Kenya Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, based at Laare Police Station.
According to police reports, officers encountered a group of about five individuals behaving suspiciously in Shauri Yako. When challenged, the suspects allegedly opened fire, prompting officers to return fire in what authorities described as an act of self-defense.
During the exchange, one suspect was fatally shot while the others fled the scene. Police later identified the deceased as Mutembei Kola, whom they described as a notorious figure linked to a series of criminal activities in the area.
At the scene, officers recovered a Beretta Gardone pistol loaded with three live rounds of ammunition and one spent cartridge, which investigators believe was used during the confrontation.
The body of the deceased was moved to Nyambene Sub-County Hospital Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
Authorities have since launched a manhunt for the four suspects who escaped, warning that they are still armed and may pose a threat to the public.
The operation comes amid increased security efforts in parts of Meru County, where residents have in recent months raised concerns over rising cases of armed robbery and gang-related activities.
Similar police operations in counties such as Isiolo County and Laikipia County have also targeted criminal gangs and illegal firearms, reflecting a broader national push to curb violent crime.
While police have praised the officers involved for their response, such incidents often draw public attention to the use of force and the need for thorough investigations to ensure accountability and adherence to the law.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has reiterated its commitment to pursuing the remaining suspects and dismantling criminal networks, urging members of the public to share any information that could assist in the ongoing investigation.
