Notorious Ex-Convict Arrested in Meru Over Violent Robbery Spree

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested a suspected armed robber linked to a series of violent incidents in parts of Meru County, marking a major breakthrough in efforts to curb criminal activity in the region.

The suspect, identified as Jason Kobia Mucoka, 47, was apprehended during a joint security operation conducted by officers from the Kenya Police Service and the Administration Police Service. Authorities say the suspect had been linked to a wave of violent robberies that had instilled fear among residents in several parts of the Igembe region.

Arrest Following Intelligence-Led Operation

According to investigators, the arrest followed a carefully coordinated operation based on intelligence gathered by security agencies. The suspect was captured in the Kabachi area after authorities tracked his alleged activities across several towns, including Mutuati, Laare, and Maua in Meru County.

Police say the suspect had recently been released from prison after serving a lengthy sentence related to a previous murder conviction. Investigators allege that shortly after regaining his freedom, he became involved in criminal activities, including organising robbery operations and recruiting accomplices.

Residents in the affected areas had reportedly raised alarm over increasing insecurity, with reports of armed intimidation and threats directed at locals who attempted to challenge the suspect’s activities.

Firearm Recovered in Miraa Plantation

During interrogation, detectives say the suspect provided information that led them to a concealed firearm hidden near his residence. Authorities recovered what they described as a Pachet submachine gun, which had been hidden in a nearby miraa plantation.

Police confirmed that the firearm was loaded with six rounds of 9mm ammunition at the time of recovery. The weapon has since been seized as evidence and transferred to the National Police Forensic Laboratory for ballistic analysis to determine whether it may have been used in previous crimes.

Charges and Ongoing Investigations

The suspect remains in custody and is expected to face multiple charges, including:

  • Robbery with violence

  • Illegal possession of a firearm

  • Threats to kill

Investigators say the probe is ongoing, with authorities working to identify additional suspects believed to have been part of the alleged criminal network.

Security agencies are also attempting to trace the origin of the recovered firearm and the supply chain behind the ammunition.

Security Agencies Reaffirm Crackdown on Crime

The arrest underscores ongoing efforts by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and other security agencies to dismantle organised criminal groups operating across parts of Meru County.

Authorities have assured residents that operations will continue until all individuals connected to the robberies are apprehended.

Officials emphasized that coordinated security efforts between the Kenya Police Service, Administration Police Service, and investigative units remain critical in addressing violent crime and maintaining public safety across the region.
