Narok Campaign Chaos as Police Teargas Gachagua During Rally

Narok campaign chaos unfolded on Monday after Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua was tear-gassed while addressing supporters in the town. The disruption came just three days before the Narok Town Ward by-election, heightening political tension in the region.
Police Block Roads Ahead of Gachagua Visit
Security presence intensified early in the day as police mounted roadblocks aimed at restricting Gachagua’s entry into Narok town. Despite the obstacles, he managed to reach the venue, where large crowds had gathered to listen to his final campaign message. Witnesses described a charged atmosphere as youth chanted political slogans and stood their ground despite the tense standoff with officers.
Barely minutes after Gachagua began speaking from his campaign convoy, police fired tear gas toward the crowd. Supporters dispersed in panic as the DCP leader ducked for cover. Gachagua wore a protective helmet, seemingly anticipating possible confrontation during the day’s events.
DCP Leader Condemns Disruption
Gachagua later issued a statement claiming the security deployment was a deliberate attempt to disrupt his campaign activities. He criticised the authorities, accusing them of using force to silence political competition. The DCP leader insisted that citizens had a constitutional right to assemble and participate in the democratic process without intimidation.
He maintained that the people of Narok remained determined to exercise their rights despite the heavy security presence. Gachagua vowed that his party would continue campaigning and pushing for political space, emphasising that no amount of force would deter them.
High Stakes in Narok By-Election
The Narok Town Ward by-election has emerged as a competitive political contest. DCP is backing Douglas Masikonde, while the ruling United Democratic Alliance is fronting Robert Kanyinge Ole Kudate. With only days left before voting, both parties are intensifying efforts to secure support in an area known for spirited political competition.
Elsewhere, political mobilisation is also in full swing in Mbeere North, where another crucial parliamentary contest is drawing national attention. Analysts believe the outcomes of these by-elections could influence broader political realignments heading into future national battles.
No injuries were reported in Narok despite the confrontation, and calm gradually returned after crowds dispersed. However, the incident has ignited renewed debate over police conduct, politics, and freedom of assembly during campaign periods.
