KDF Begins Construction of New Welfare Mall at Moi Barracks
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has started building a new welfare mall at Moi Barracks in Eldoret. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
Mall to Offer Affordable Services for Military Families
The Defence Forces Welfare Services (DEFWES) Mall will include supermarkets, restaurants, and fuel stations. It aims to provide cost-friendly goods and services to soldiers, veterans, and their families in the region.
“The project marks a major stride in KDF’s commitment to improving quality of life,” the military said in a statement.
General Charles Kahariri, Chief of the Defence Forces, led the ceremony. He called it a key step in enhancing welfare and operational infrastructure for service members nationwide.
Part of Broader KDF Welfare Strategy
KDF says the mall will support the social, economic, and cultural well-being of military households. It is part of a larger effort to modernize barracks and improve living conditions.
The event preceded the annual KDF Day celebrations, attended by President William Ruto. For the first time since taking office, Ruto wore a full military uniform as Commander-in-Chief.
Recruitment Drive Underway
The mall launch coincides with the 2025 KDF recruitment exercise, which began on October 13. The drive runs until October 25 and targets multiple roles, including officers, tradesmen, and constables.
Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya emphasized that recruitment is free and fair. “Any form of bribery will lead to prosecution,” she warned.
She urged eligible Kenyans to apply without fear. “The KDF stands for discipline, dignity, and duty,” she added.
