Audio Clip Raises Questions Over Influence in Raphael Tuju Property Dispute

A clip has surfaced capturing businessman Tom Awili urging former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju to seek intervention from President William Ruto in an effort to safeguard his property.

In the recording, Awili is heard advising Tuju to “speak to the President” if he wants his challenges resolved, suggesting that engaging high-level political influence could offer a way out of his ongoing legal and financial disputes.

The clip has quickly drawn attention given the individuals involved and the broader context surrounding Tuju’s high-profile legal battle over a multi-billion shilling loan dispute tied to his company, Dari Limited.

Tom Awili is among four individuals previously arrested during a raid conducted by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC). Others implicated in the operation include former judge Joseph Mutava and lawyer Kimani Wachira.

In the same clip, Awili is also heard referring to Wachira as “the lawyers’ president,” while implying that connections within powerful circles could make Tuju’s legal troubles “disappear.” The remarks have intensified public debate over the role of influence, networks, and alleged backdoor dealings in high-stakes legal disputes.

The emergence of the recording comes at a sensitive time, as Tuju remains at the center of legal proceedings involving a contested loan and potential auction of valuable property. The situation has already attracted national attention due to the scale of the dispute and Tuju’s prominence in Kenya’s political landscape.

While the authenticity and full context of the clip are yet to be independently verified, its contents are likely to raise further questions about governance, integrity, and the intersection between politics, business, and the justice system.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has not issued an immediate statement regarding the clip, but the development is expected to add pressure for deeper investigations into the individuals mentioned and the broader circumstances surrounding the case.

Observers note that if substantiated, the remarks could fuel ongoing concerns about undue influence in legal and commercial matters, particularly where high-profile individuals and significant financial interests are involved.
