The devastating floods in Mexico have left at least 64 people dead and 65 others missing as heavy rainfall continues to batter parts of the country.

Rising Toll in Veracruz, Hidalgo, and Puebla

The floods, which have hit the central and eastern regions, have caused widespread destruction across Veracruz, Hidalgo, and Puebla states. Laura Velazquez, Mexico’s head of civil defense, confirmed the updated figures on Monday, noting that the death toll had risen by 17 within just 12 hours — a sign of the disaster’s escalating scale.

Entire villages have been submerged as rivers burst their banks, while landslides have destroyed homes and swept away roads and bridges. Emergency responders are racing against time to reach affected communities cut off by rising waters and damaged infrastructure.

Massive Rescue and Relief Operation Underway

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that thousands of military personnel, supported by boats, helicopters, and aircraft, have been mobilized to rescue trapped residents and distribute emergency aid. Over 10,000 troops have been deployed alongside rescue vehicles and equipment to assist local authorities.

Shelters opened across the hardest-hit regions. They accommodate displaced families. Humanitarian agencies work around the clock. They deliver food, medical supplies, and other essentials.

Record Rainfall and Ongoing Threat

Mexico has endured unusually intense rains throughout 2025, with meteorologists confirming record rainfall levels in Mexico City earlier this year. Experts warn that the combination of saturated ground and ongoing storms could worsen flooding in the coming days.

Authorities are urging residents in low-lying areas to evacuate as weather forecasts predict more heavy rain this week. The government has also prioritized clearing blocked roads to restore access to isolated areas and ensure the swift delivery of aid.

This flooding tragedy underscores Mexico’s growing climate challenges. Extreme weather threatens vulnerable communities there.
