The African Union Commission (AUC) has paid tribute to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga following his death in India, describing him as “one of Africa’s most visionary sons.”

In a statement on Wednesday, AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed deep sorrow over Raila’s passing and extended condolences to his family, the Government of Kenya, and the entire African continent.

AU Chair Hails Raila Odinga’s Pan-African Legacy

“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has learned with profound sadness of the passing of H.E. Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya and a distinguished statesman of the African continent,” the AUC stated.

Youssouf praised Raila Odinga for his decades-long commitment to democracy, unity, and reform, noting that the continent had lost a leader who embodied dialogue and resilience.

“The continent has lost a statesman whose dedication to dialogue, reform, and unity was unmatched,” Youssouf added.

Raila’s Contribution to Continental Development

The AUC chair highlighted Raila’s impact as the AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development, a role in which he advanced regional connectivity and integration projects. Hewas instrumental in initiatives that laid the foundation for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Raila Odinga died on Wednesday, October 15, after suffering cardiac arrest during a morning walk at an Ayurvedic hospital in India, where he had been receiving treatment.

Raila Odinga’s AU Chairmanship Bid

Youssouf’s tribute held added significance for observers. Raila was his main contender in the February 2025 AU election. Raila sought the Commission Chairperson position. President William Ruto backed Raila’s extensive Africa-wide campaign. He secured support from at least 21 countries. However, Raila ultimately lost the election in the sixth round.

Despite the competition, Youssouf lauded Raila’s vision and leadership, emphasizing their shared commitment to the continent’s development.

Zambia’s President Mourns “Friend” Raila Odinga

Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema also mourned Raila, calling him a “towering advocate for democracy.” He extended condolences to Kenyans and the Odinga family, praising Raila’s lifelong efforts to advance constitutional reforms and foster dialogue.

“In honouring his memory, we celebrate his many contributions. His legacy will endure,” Hichilema said.
