The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has announced the indefinite postponement of its much-anticipated grassroots elections in Tana River County, which had been scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2026.
In an official notice issued by the party’s National Elections Board (NEB) and dated April 30, 2026, UDA confirmed that the elections would no longer proceed as planned and would instead be held at a later date to be communicated.
The notice, signed by Anthony Mwaura, Chairperson of the NEB, referenced an earlier communication dated April 7, 2026, which had initially set the election timeline. However, no specific reason was provided for the abrupt postponement, leaving party members and stakeholders awaiting further clarification.
“All members, leaders, aspirants, and stakeholders are requested to take note of this development and await further communication,” the statement read, emphasizing the party’s appreciation for continued cooperation and understanding.
The announcement was also echoed through UDA’s official communication channels, reinforcing that the elections have been postponed until further notice, effectively halting ongoing preparations in the coastal county.
The grassroots elections are a critical component of UDA’s internal party structure, aimed at strengthening its base, identifying local leadership, and consolidating support ahead of future political contests, including the 2027 general elections.
The postponement in Tana River now raises questions about logistical, political, or administrative challenges that may have influenced the decision, though the party has not publicly elaborated on the circumstances.

Political observers note that grassroots elections often play a key role in shaping party influence at the county level, particularly in regions like Tana River, where political competition and alignment remain dynamic.
As of now, UDA members in the county have been advised to remain on standby for new dates, with expectations that further communication will clarify both the timeline and the reasons behind the delay.
The development adds to a growing list of internal political adjustments within major parties as they recalibrate strategies ahead of the next electoral cycle.
