A targeted security operation in Migori County has led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of an illegal firearm, in what authorities describe as a significant step in disrupting criminal activity in the region.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, working alongside K9 officers from Isebania Police Station in Migori, conducted the intelligence-led raid in Nyametaburo Location following credible information about suspected illegal activity.
The operation zeroed in on a residence in Makerero Village belonging to 51-year-old James Mukwabe Soko, where officers carried out a thorough search of the premises.
During the search, detectives uncovered a homemade firearm hidden beneath a sofa set, along with a single round of ammunition that had been wrapped in aluminium foil—an indication of deliberate concealment.
Additional items recovered from the house raised further suspicion, including a twisted metal rod, a blue balaclava mask, a dotted dera dress, a black marvin, and a black jacket believed to have been used to conceal or transport the weapon.
Investigators suspect that these items may have been used in criminal activities or prepared for potential operations, though further forensic analysis is expected to determine their exact role.
Following the discovery, the first suspect reportedly cooperated with authorities and led officers to another residence within Nyametaburo.
This second operation resulted in the arrest of Daniel Muronge Rioba, believed to be an accomplice in the case.
At the second location, detectives recovered a Maasai sword in a red sheath, adding to the cache of weapons linked to the suspects.
Preliminary findings suggest that James Mukwabe Soko is not new to law enforcement, with investigators indicating that he is a habitual offender facing multiple pending cases at the Kehancha Law Courts.
This background has raised concerns among security agencies about repeat offenders and the persistence of criminal networks in the area.
Both suspects are currently being held in police custody as investigations continue, with authorities expected to piece together whether the recovered items were linked to planned or previously executed crimes.

They are set to be arraigned in court once processing is complete and formal charges are prepared.
The operation highlights the growing reliance on intelligence-driven policing in Kenya, where collaboration between detectives and specialized units such as K9 teams is proving effective in uncovering hidden threats.
It also underscores ongoing efforts by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to dismantle criminal networks and curb the proliferation of illegal firearms, which remain a key security concern in various parts of the country.
As investigations progress, authorities are expected to provide further details on the suspects’ activities and any wider connections, as part of broader efforts to enhance public safety and restore confidence in law enforcement.
