Kimani Mbugua final words: The father of former Citizen TV journalist Kimani Mbugua has shared the emotional details of his son’s final moments before his tragic death last week.

Speaking to journalists, Dedan Kimathi, Kimani’s father, confirmed that his son died by suicide on October 15 while receiving care at a rehabilitation centre. He revealed that Kimani left behind a brief note expressing his exhaustion from a prolonged battle with depression.

Kimani’s Final Words Revealed

Kimathi recalled his son’s last words, which read, “I have chosen to rest in the hands of God.” He said Kimani appeared calm and sober in the days leading up to his death, which made the news even more devastating.

“In one of the paragraphs, he said, ‘I am tired; I have fought this body for long; it has affected my mind. I have been in treatment, and I am not getting well,’” Kimathi recounted.

The grieving father said Kimani’s note showed a man who had reached emotional and physical exhaustion despite repeated attempts to seek treatment.

“He also told me, ‘I have done my best in life, but I want to rest. I have no grudge with anyone,’” he added.

Family Rules Out Foul Play

Kimathi emphasized that the family does not blame anyone for Kimani’s death. He noted that investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the circumstances of his passing through available footage from the facility.

“We are not blaming anyone. There is clear footage showing how he took his own life,” he said.

He described Kimani as a bright, loving son who had struggled with mental health challenges for years, despite multiple rehabilitation efforts and support from family and friends.

Message to Kenyans on Mental Health

In his message to the public, Kimathi urged Kenyans to seek spiritual guidance and professional help when dealing with emotional distress, while discouraging anyone from taking their own life.

Kimani’s passing has reignited national conversations on mental health awareness, especially among young professionals in Kenya’s media industry.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, reach out for help. Call the Kenya Red Cross toll-free hotline 1199 for counseling and support.
