UDA Demands Show Cause Letter from Boni Khalwale
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has formally demanded Senator Boni Khalwale explain why he should not face disciplinary action for supporting an opposition candidate in the Malava parliamentary by-election.
In a letter dated Tuesday, October 14, 2025, UDA’s Disciplinary Committee accused Khalwale of openly campaigning for DAP-K’s Seth Panyako, despite the party fielding its own candidate, David Ndakwa.
Breach of Party Loyalty
The letter cited media reports and public appearances showing Khalwale celebrating Panyako’s IEBC clearance and actively participating in his campaign events.
“These include your open support and participation in the campaigns of a candidate from a different political party,” the letter stated, calling the actions a clear violation of party discipline.
Khalwale has 14 days to submit a written response to the UDA secretariat. Failure to justify his conduct could trigger formal disciplinary proceedings under Article 68(p) of the party constitution.
Khalwale’s Justification: Broken Promise to Malulu’s Son
The senator has defended his stance, saying UDA failed to honor the late Malava MP Malulu Injendi’s family. While widows of deceased leaders like William Cheptumo and Dalmas Otieno received state appointments, Malulu’s son Ryan Injendi was denied the UDA ticket.
“I thought you would allow him to serve as MP,” Khalwale said. “Instead, you brought an MCA. So now, we’ll decide who to vote for—without your interference.”
Ryan lost the UDA nomination to Ndakwa, the Kakamega County Assembly Minority Leader, on September 21.
Political Fallout in Western Kenya
Khalwale’s defiance highlights growing tensions within UDA in Western Kenya. His public alliance with DAP-K—a party aligned with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga—signals a potential realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
UDA’s move to discipline him may either rein in dissent—or fuel further rebellion among grassroots leaders who feel sidelined.
