Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has issued a final directive requiring all property owners, tenants, and managers in key city areas to repaint their buildings and repair security lights within 14 days. Those who fail to comply will face penalties, including possible closure of their premises.

County’s Final Compliance Notice

According to a notice signed by Acting County Secretary Godfrey Akumali, the directive targets buildings in the Central Business District (CBD), Westlands, Upper Hill, Ngara, Kirinyaga Road, and other major shopping centers.

Akumali stated that the order aims to ensure all buildings meet public health and housing standards under the Public Health Act (Cap 242) and the Physical and Land Use Planning Act (2019).

“This notice takes effect immediately and remains valid for fourteen days only,” the statement read. “Failure to comply will result in statutory closure orders and prosecution in line with Sections 115, 118, and 126 of the Public Health Act.”

Enhancing Nairobi’s Aesthetic Appeal

The county government said the repainting drive seeks to restore Nairobi’s aesthetic appeal while improving hygiene and safety. Over recent months, City Hall has emphasized urban renewal, waste management, and beautification as part of its broader plan to transform the capital.

To encourage compliance, property owners have been exempted from paying repainting permit fees. County officials said this waiver aims to make the process more affordable and to foster cooperation between the government and property owners.

Background and Enforcement

In January 2025, City Hall issued an initial 90-day directive requiring property owners to repaint their buildings. However, many failed to comply. The new order, therefore, serves as a final 14-day warning before enforcement begins.

Officials warned that non-compliance will lead to closure orders, fines, or prosecution. The departments of Public Health and Urban Planning expect joint inspection teams to begin checking buildings immediately after the deadline.

Commitment to a Cleaner, Safer City

Governor Sakaja’s administration says the operation aligns with ongoing efforts to modernize Nairobi and create an investor-friendly environment. The repainting campaign also supports the county’s broader plan to improve public safety, environmental health, and city aesthetics.

Residents and business owners have been urged to cooperate and help transform the city into a cleaner, safer, and more attractive capital for both locals and visitors.
