Upon arrival, they spotted two suspects fleeing toward Rhemu flats. The officers pursued them, ordering them to surrender. Nairobi police commander Adamson Bungei stated that the suspects ignored the orders, leading police to open fire. One suspect was fatally shot, while the other managed to escape into the darkness.

A search of the deceased suspect’s body revealed a toy pistol, a knife tucked in his waistband, and two mobile phones. The unidentified male, believed to be around 25 years old, was taken to the City Mortuary, awaiting postmortem.

Robbery in Isiolo Leaves One Injured

In a separate incident in Merti, Isiolo, a 50-year-old man was seriously injured during a livestock robbery. Armed attackers raided the Dadacha-anan area, shooting at herders before stealing 33 cows and fleeing toward Samburu.

Mamo, a herder, sustained a gunshot wound to his right thigh during the attack and was rushed to the hospital in serious condition. Police responded to the scene, but the gunmen had already escaped.

This area is one of several in Northern Kenya under multi-agency security operations due to frequent bandit attacks. Other affected regions include Turkana, Meru, Marsabit, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Samburu.

Government’s Efforts to Combat Cattle Rustling

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has expressed concern over the persistent cattle rustling in Northern Kenya, describing it as an organized criminal activity. The raids have led to numerous deaths, widespread poverty, and displacement of communities.

Kindiki highlighted the devastating impact of cattle rustling, which deprives pastoral communities of their livelihoods and fuels cycles of revenge attacks. The government has intensified efforts to dismantle the networks facilitating these crimes, with a focus on recovering stolen livestock and penalizing those involved in the rustling operations.

Kindiki reiterated the government’s commitment to making cattle rustling a “painful venture” for those involved, ensuring the recovery of livestock, and rewarding facilitators of successful recoveries.
