33-Seater Bus Plunges Into River Along Waiyaki Way, Dozens Injured

A 33-seater bus accident along Waiyaki Way left dozens of passengers injured on Tuesday evening, October 7, 2025. The vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a river at Waruku, Nairobi, sparking an urgent rescue operation.
Bus Loses Control at Waruku
According to eyewitnesses, the bus lost control and flipped on its side before landing in the Mashagusha stream, a tributary of the Kitusuru River, near Waruku Village in Kileleshwa.
Nairobi Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria confirmed the accident, saying that at least 30 passengers sustained serious injuries.
“A bus has plunged into a river at Waruku, off Waiyaki Way. Over 30 injured, with more than 20 at Riverside Medical Center,” Mosiria stated on his social media pages.
Rescue Operations Underway
The bus was partially submerged in water, complicating rescue efforts as civilians and emergency teams rushed to save trapped passengers. Witnesses reported scenes of panic as rescuers broke windows to pull people from the overturned vehicle.
Images from the scene showed the bus lying on its side in the shallow riverbed, with injured passengers being helped to safety by onlookers.
At the time of reporting, authorities had not confirmed any fatalities, although several passengers were said to have sustained life-threatening injuries.
Recent Accidents Raise Safety Concerns
Tuesday’s crash marked the second public transport incident in Nairobi within weeks. In September, a bus along Jogoo Road overturned, killing one person and injuring several others.
Earlier the same day, a separate accident occurred on Thika Highway when a private car veered off an exit and overturned, though no serious injuries were reported.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the Waiyaki Way bus accident.
Road Safety Worries in Nairobi
The spate of accidents has reignited concerns over road safety, particularly involving speeding and vehicle maintenance in Nairobi’s busy corridors. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, especially during the ongoing rainy season that leaves many city roads slippery.
